FISH - 4 Principles

Four main principles from the book - FISH!

PLAY - Play is not a specific game or activity. It is a state of mind that brings new energy to the tasks at hand and sparks creative solutions.

MAKE THEIR DAY - If you find your energy lapsing, find someone who needs a helping hand, a word of support, or a good ear - and make their day.

BE THERE - To "be there" is to be fully engaged in the moment, inviting opportunities, and sharing the experience together.

CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE - Your attitude is your reaction to what life hands you, and only you can choose that reaction.

Lessons from Bhagavad Gita - What is driving us?

We work & live based on these 7 emotions:
1. Greed
2. Fear
3. Worry
4. Need for attention (Name & Fame)
5. Comparison & Jealousy
6. Ego
7. Deep discontentment

These are the qualities with which one lives. At one point or other we are running our life with one or more of these emotions.
Scan your life... every moment... you are living with one of these!

We are being fueled by one or more of these emotions!!
We even approach God in the same way...

Gratitude --- We should be living with gratitude! Instead of being centered in one of the 7 emotions, we should be centered in GRATITUDE!

Sanskrit Tradition

Prof. Dean Brown points out that most European languages can be traced back to a root language that is also related to Sanskrit - the sacred language of the ancient Vedic religions of India. Many English words actually have Sanskrit origins. Similarly, many Vedic religious concepts can also be found in Western culture. He discusses the fundamental idea of the Upanishads - that the essence of each individual, the atman, is identical to the whole universe, the principle of brahman. In this sense, the polytheistic traditions of India can be said to be monistic at their very core.

The Essence of Survival

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed... every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle... when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.

The Power of Perspective

A positive perspective removes the rust from our minds and helps us see beyond the box we've built for ourselves. Large obstacles seem smaller, long distances can be made shorter, and the unknown becomes familiar. Pausing to take a different view and appreciating everything more fully helps us understand where we are going.

The Power of Belief

Believe in yourself. You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you stop to look fear in the face... You must do that which you think you cannot do.

The Essence of Imagination

What we can easily see is only a small percentage of what is possible. Imagination is having the vision to see what is just below the surface; to picture that which is essential, but invisible to the eye.

The Essence of Determination

Determination is born out of purpose... knowing that you are gifted for something and this something must be attained. It is never enough to rely on luck or natural talent. You must, above all, believe in yourself, face your goals, and then fight as if your life depended on it.

The Essence of Destiny

Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Choose your words, for they become actions. Understand your actions, for they become habits. Study your habits, for they will become your character. Develop your character, for it becomes your destiny.

Commitment

Objectives are not fate; they are direction. They are not commands; they are commitments. They do not determine the future; they are a means to empower your abilities and energies for the task of making your future.

The Essence of Initiative

The future doesn’t just happen, it is created... Our destiny is not in the stars, but in ourselves. We may need to follow in the wake of those who have gone before, but what we do and where we go is ultimately up to us. The attitude of initiative is an on-going state of exploration that is never finished... a journey that never ends.

Life is a Journey

In the end, each of us will be judged by our standard of life, not by our standard of living; by our measure of giving, not by our measure of wealth; by our simple goodness, not by our seeming greatness.

Spirit of Achievement

Achievement is not always defined by victory. Sometimes achievement lies in the honest endeavor to do your best under all circumstances, knowing that on any given day, intense personal effort may be the only thing that separates you from your competition. To be your best, grab your paddle and get moving.

The Essence of Success

Successful is the person who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of children, who leaves the world better than they found it, who has never lacked appreciation for the earth's beauty, who never fails to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves.

The Sky's the Limit

Everyone has potential... It is an infinite resource that cannot be exhausted, but can be lost in the clouds of fear and complacency. It may take courage to embrace the possibilities of your own potential, but once you've flown past the summit of your fears, nothing will seem impossible.
- Michael McKee

The Courage of Integrity

The highest courage is to dare to be yourself in the face of adversity. Choosing right over wrong, ethics over convenience, and truth over popularity…these are the choices that measure your life. Travel the path of integrity without looking back, for there is never a wrong time to do the right thing.

Vision

Advance confidently in the direction of your dreams and endeavor to live the life you have imagined. The future is not just some place you are going to, but is a place you are creating, and the paths to it are not found, they are made. Follow your passion as long as you live, and on this you will reach success.

The Power of a Leader

True leaders are not those who strive to be first but those who are first to strive and who give their all for the success of the team. True leaders are first to see the need, envision the plan, and empower the team for action. By the strength of the leader's commitment, the power of the team is unleashed.

The Essence of Teamwork

Teamwork means that we share a common ideal and embrace a common goal. Regardless of our differences, we strive shoulder to shoulder, confident in one another's faith, trust and commitment. In the end, teamwork can be summed up in five short words... we believe in each other.

The Essence of Leadership

A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the quality of his actions and the integrity of his intent. In the end, leaders are much like eagles... they don't flock, you find them one at a time.

The Power of Attitude

Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but by how we react to what happens; not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst... a spark that creates extraordinary results.

The three hardest tasks in the world are neither physical feats nor intellectual achievements, but moral acts: to return love for hate, to include the excluded, and to say, "I was wrong".

Quote - Norton Juster

"You must never feel badly about making mistakes," explained Reason quietly, "as long as you take the trouble to learn from them. For you often learn more by being wrong for the right reasons than you do by being right for the wrong reasons."
